Are you an APPAM student member in search of career development support, research guidance, and networking? This program matches student members with professional members to connect one-on-one regarding professional development topics. We host meet-ups at the fall conference and various online events to connect throughout the year.
Mentors and mentees are encouraged to check-in at least once per quarter. We encourage both students and professional members in the program to connect and expand their professional networks throughout the year and beyond. Due to the Fall Research Conference going virtual this year, we will offer individual matching as well as a virtual event on Tuesday, November 10th at pm.
This program is designed to increase access and help make the playing field less inequitable to the BIPOC students who have been minoritized.
The beginning of a mentor program is critical to its success. There is a lot of behind the scenes work that goes into setting up a program but the first company wide exposure to a mentoring program is often the mentor matching process. Potential mentees are often excited at the prospect of having access to certain mentors. Often, those mentors are people they would not usually have access to and this in itself can enthuse the program. When launching a mentoring program, certain people within the company will be more in-demand than others often based on their job title or reputation.
Who would not want to build a relationship with the top people in the company and formalise it via a mentoring connection? However, this does not mean that the CEO would be the best match for everyone.

It looks like there will be a strong pool of mentors, so students are likely to get paired up with people who are a good fit, in terms of research interests, identity, and professional goals. Do you think it would be neato if we were able to ramp up the Mentor Match family of programs to more STEM disciplines? You just got to have a bit of activation energy to get it started. Also, an all-of-STEM mentor match for grad school applications already exists though not under that name and they seem to be doing quite well, and rather than try to duplicate it, I suspect with field-specific approaches we might fill in some gaps.
